On April 8/9, 2017, the Huskies traveled to Mercer Lake, NJ to compete in the annual Knecht Cup. After Saturday’s races were cancelled due to high winds, the team returned Sunday ready to race.
The 1V8+ placed first in the grand final of the club 8+ category, beating competitive schools such as Villanova, Rhode Island, and Bucknell. They automatically qualified for the grand final after a second place finish in heats. This first place finish shows how much the hard work, positive mindset, and drive for success has paid off. The team is motivated to continue on, with New England and National championships quickly approaching.
The 2V8+, 1N8+, and 2N8+ all rowed hard against tough competition. The 1N8+ missed qualifiying for the grand final by one spot, with a one second gap pushing them out. Due to the wind, the novice petite final was eliminated. Although the 2V8+ and 2N8+ did not advance after heats, they are both focused on new things to work on to build speed over the next couple weeks.
Overall, the Knecht Cup was a success for UConn. The first place finish in the 1V8+ marks the first gold medal for the team at Knecht, in 8+’s. The team is back on the water, motivated more than ever to continue growth of the program for the future.
