This past Saturday the UConn Men’s Crew team traveled to Shelton, CT for the 21st annual Head of the Housatonic Regatta. There, the team entered 2 Varsity 8+s, 3 Novice 8+s, a Varsity 4+, and a Novice 4+
The first Varsity 8+ earned second in the Collegiate 8+ only 5 seconds behind the winner, Fairfield University with the second Varsity 8+ coming in 6th. The first Varsity 8+ was coxed by Jacob Belanger and rowed by Matthew Kessenich (stroke), Phillip Hallwood (7 seat), Colm O Riada (6 seat), Phillip Hnatowicz (5 seat), James Traglia (4 seat), Eric Burfeind (3 seat), Jacob Bond (2 seat), and Conner Gavin (bow).
The first Novice 8+ won their heat with the second Novice 8+ placing 5th and the third Novice 8+ coming in 7th. The Novice 8+ was coxed by Kaitlyn Lyons and rowed by Ian Richardson (stroke), Noah Freeman (7 seat), Jack Kostal (6 seat), Jack Fritch (5 seat), Paul Lori (4 seat), Patrick Madaus (3 seat), and Tony Vournazos (bow).
The Novice 4+ placed second in their event coming in right behind the Ivy League Columbia University. The Varsity 4+ had a tough race in a strong field of crews and placed 12th.
Next up the Huskies look towards the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta where they are sending a Varsity 4+ in hopes to be the first UConn Men’s Crew boat to medal at the world’s largest regatta.
